Other Characters: Wasp, Airazor
Name: Derpy Hooves
From: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Appearance:
Age: Young adult
Gender: Female
Personality: Though she often frustrates others due to her clumsiness, Derpy is a generally good-natured pony who’s often seen with a smile on her face.
Awkwardness is her defining trait. She’s often clumsy, crashing into things, dropping things or inadvertently breaking something. She doesn’t let this get her down, though; she smiles through it all and bounces back from almost any mishap she causes.
She’s also surprisingly oblivious to her own ineptitude, not really noticing things like her bouncing on a cloud causing lightning to strike randomly or a box she drops landing on somepony’s head.
Despite her foibles, she’s well-meaning and a hard worker. She participates in both the efforts to clean up the dragon smoke over Ponyville and to clear the snow clouds at the beginning of spring. She also offers her wing power as part of the tornado team meant to lift rainwater to Cloudsdale. None of her usual disasters occur during these efforts, proving that perhaps when she’s focused and on task, she can be an effective weather pony. She wants to be helpful in other instances as well, though that tends to lead to disaster, such as the destruction of town hall…All because she was attempting to help hang a banner.
Derpy is adventurous, showing up in all kinds of places. She offers her best effort at the Best Young Fliers Competition, is seen at the Grand Galloping Gala, several times on the train going to Canterlot, and even at the royal wedding of Princess Cadence and Shining Armor.
She’s also friendly and often seen clustered with other ponies at parties or events around town, though she doesn’t seem to have any particular friends and interacts with everypony about equally.
Backstory: Derpy is a Pegasus most likely from Cloudsdale. How and why she wound up in Ponyville is still an unknown, though a combination of her sense of adventure and poor sense of direction may have lead her there.
At some point after her arrival in Ponyville, she joined up with Rainbow Dash’s weather team and began working on the cloud removal crew, which helped keep the skies clear of rain/snow clouds, unless there was a scheduled storm. She’s also part of a crew that helps prepare the town for when storms are due.
She participated in the annual Running of the Leaves at the start of autumn, working with the other residents of Ponyville to bring the leaves down from the trees in preparation for winter. Later she takes part in the winter wrap-up activities, serving as a member of the weather team who removes the clouds and retrieves the migrated birds.
Derpy also attends many of Ponyville’s holiday gatherings. She attends the Nightmare Night festivities dressed as Derpy-only-knows what with paper bags on her hooves and head, where she participates in –and subsequently ruins- the apple bob. She’s also present at the Hearth’s Warming Eve pageant in Canterlot, though Cherry Cola spoils her fun of waving at the audience before the show starts. She also spends most of Hearts and Hooves Day hanging out with Time Turner, chatting on a bridge in town.
After reading one of Rainbow Dash’s announcement fliers that Ponyville’s Pegasi were chosen to funnel the year’s rain supply to Cloudsdale, Derpy participates in hurricane duty training, attempting to get her wing power up to speed and help make the effort a success. She participates in both the unsuccessful –somehow managing to be the last pony to land after it falls apart- and successful tornados.
She later destroys the Ponyville Town Hall when attempting to help Rainbow Dash hang a banner honoring Applejack prior to her departure for the rodeo. While bouncing on a cloud, Derpy causes several lightning bolts to zap nearby things, including Rainbow Dash’s tail and the roof of the hall. She knocks over a column holding up the building by backing into it and later breaks a floor board simply by sitting down. It’s due to her mishaps that Applejack promises to earn prize money to fix the hall, and though Derpy seems oblivious to this fact, it is indirectly her fault that Applejack runs away when she fails to take first place in any of the rodeo’s competitions.
What her next adventure may be is uncertain, though there’s bound to be a lot of unintentional disaster involved!
Moral Standing: Good
Dreams: Most of her dreams are simple, revolving around food, flying and clouds. She doesn’t really aspire to much, other than the be happy and hang out with her friends and go on “adventures” to places every other pony is already going as well.
Fears: She’s presumably frightened of Nightmare Moon, as all of the townsponies are upon Princess Luna’s arrival in town on Nightmare Night.
It is also my headcanon that she has a subconscious fear of breaking something so badly it will never be fixed.
Extra: During a brief stint as a mover, she dropped numerous items on Twilight Sparkle’s head.
She likes asparagus and muffins.
Her saddlebag has a muffin clasp on it, as opposed to one resembling her cutie mark.
She has no idea her own strength – She can break things just by bumping into them or sitting on them!
She’s directionally-challenged, but can fly surprisingly well, most of the time.
Whether she’s incredibly accident prone or just subject to Murphy’s Law is still up for debate.
Character Location: None
Samples: Oops, my bad
Bobbing for…plugs?
Writing Sample: It seemed easy enough, making the muffins herself.
All she had to do, after all, was follow the recipe. Simple, right?
Except for the fact that the recipe had been ripped out of a magazine and she wasn’t especially good at ripping things straight and some of the ingredients and subsequent instructions were, therefore, missing.
She preheat the oven –was that supposed to be a three or a five?- then set about mixing the ingredients, dumping things into the bowl and humming cheerfully. Half the measurements were gone, so she just fudged it, guessing what the numbers were supposed to be. Or –after some confusion and internal debate- deciding whether the recipe called for tablespoons or teaspoons of salt, vanilla and did that say baking soda or baking powder?
The batter came out a little lumpy and she completely missed the part where she was supposed to grease the muffin tins before filling them, but still. Derpy slid the pan into the oven, smiling proudly as she set the kitchen timer.
She had done it.
And now, the rest of the weather crew! They would be so surprised! When it was her turn to bring snack to the team meetings, she usually just picked something up at the Cakes’, or from Sweet Apple Acres, or even just from the farmers’ market. She had learned early on that her kitchen likely wouldn’t survive her cooking attempts, though she was never quite sure why – Didn’t she do exactly what the cookbooks said?
Sort of.
Sometimes she was impatient and rushed things.
But not that day! Not that day at all and the muffins would be perfect and--!
The smell of smoke jolted her back to reality.
The muffins were on fire.
